Walking in and nearby the Serra do Caramulo
Serra do Caramulo
For those who like walkings, the Caramulo Mountains in the center of Portugal, is an ideal place. The south slope of the mountain ridge, on which Quinta de Bispos is situated (at 350 meters altitude) is especially attractive. The highest point is the “Caramulinho”, at 1075 m.
- There are two official walks signalled by the local government, both of them circular, so you can start at any given point:
- Rota dos Laranjais (Route of the Orange Groves):
This route passes Quinta de Bispos at a few hundred meters and is 7,5 km. long (a 3 to 3,5 hour´s walk). This coures runs along the lower part of the slope, between 300 and 500 meters) where orange groves and traditionally cultivated terraces are combined with woodland, brooks, traditional villages and a view of Besteiros Valley.- Rota dos Caleiros (Route of the Water pipes):
This route begins at the foot of the Caramulinho, is 8,2 km long (three-and- a -half hours) and runs at an altitude between 850 and 1000 m. This route can be reached on foot from Quinta de Bispos (about 6 km) or by car (10km). High up in the Caramulo the landscape is completely different from the previous route. Here it is dominated by imposing rock formations and panoramic views. Roman paths cross a vegetation with many rare species. A climb of another 75 meters brings you to the top and a splendid view of the whole area.

Other walking areas
Apart from the Serra do Caramulo there are walks in the Serra do Bussaco, the Serra da Estrela and near São Pedro do Sul. These walks are within range of Quinta de Bispos, but only by car. We have descriptions of most of these walks available for guests.
