The Dão Vineyards
The Dão region, which borders the Serra de Caramulo where Quinta de Bispos is situated, is worth exploring. The Denomination of Origin “Dão” is one of the most prestigious in Portugal. The climatic conditions, the soil, and in connection with these, the use of certain types of grape (especially the “Touriga Nacional”, typical of this region) give the Daõ wines their own, rich and “dark” character. They age with nobility, gaining a smooth and velvety bouquet.
Visiting wineries
There is an official wine route, consisting of a map with all the wineries that receive visitors. Although not all are really prepared for this, there are several wineries with excellent facilities for visitors, such as the Quinta de Cabriz in Carregal do Sal and the Casa de Santar in Santar, where you can get a complete tour of the facilities. For groups of a minimum of 8 persons they also organize wine tasting sessions.
Biological wines
There are also some good biological wines made in the region. Casa de Mouraz in Tondela has excellent red, white and rosé wines (DOC Dão). In the Lafões district, where the white wines have much of the caracteristics of the “Vinho Verde”, the Quinta de Comenda, near São Pedro do Sul, makes a very good sparkling white wine.
